He said the gang contracted the owner of the car who was using it for ‘Uber’ to take them to Ijebu Ode from Lagos and suddenly pounced on the driver and forcefully dispossessed him of the car.
Ebrimson who paraded about 77 other criminals at the command headquarters in Eleweran Abeokuta, noted that car the snatching syndicate was traced to Ibadan in Oyo State, where he was arrested, which led to the arrest of other suspects.
Speaking to newsmen, one of the arrested member of the syndicate who gave his name as Olalekan Saheed, 45 years, and an indigene of Oyo in Oyo State confessed that he bought a Matrix car without knowing that it was a stolen car.
The suspect denied that he was not aware that the car was actually stolen.
“He introduced himself to me as an honourable and that he needed money urgently, that was the reason he wanted to sell the car”.
“He sold the car to me at N500, 000:00 (five hundred thousand Naira)”.
While answering question whether he verified the authenticity of the owner of the car, he said since he was introduced to him by a friend, he doesn’t need to doubt him again.
He added that the car seller only gave him Customs paper of the vehicle and then did change of ownership
On his part, the suspect, Damilare Thomas who sold the car confessed that the buyer did not know that the car was a stolen car.
“When we saw the car, we approached the car owner that he should take us to Ijebu Ode from Lagos, so on our way to Ijebu Ode, we robbed him and collected the car from him. Though, we did not harm the owner, I can tell you, he is still alive and lives in Lagos”
